Crafting a New Language of India Modern

Born in Calcutta and globally attuned, Pranay Baidya belongs to a new generation of designers redefining India Modern - one handwoven thread at a time.

With a background in Fashion Design from the Design & Arts College of New Zealand, and early leadership experience at New Zealand Wool Growers Marketing Ltd., Baidya’s journey has always moved fluidly between worlds - East and West, heritage and reinvention.

Returning to India, he launched his namesake label with a clear, instinctive vision: to reimagine Indian heritage textiles through the lens of modernity and mindful global living. Today, Pranay Baidya stands as a quiet powerhouse within the global fashion ecosystem - a brand deeply rooted in regional Indian craft, yet resonant across international markets.

The Brand

Since its inception, the label has built an aesthetic universe that feels relaxed, elegant, and unmistakably Indian - yet effortlessly global. From fluid cotton dresses and printed silk co-ord sets to luminous Chanderi sarees and couture-crafted bridalwear, each silhouette is conceived as a dialogue between memory and movement, craftsmanship and contemporary ease.

Retailing through leading multi-designer platforms in India, the brand also thrives through international retail partnerships and curated trunk shows - often co-hosted by tastemakers, editors, and cultural patrons across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, the UK, the US, and New Zealand.

At its heart, Pranay Baidya is defined by an intimacy with the handmade. Long-standing collaborations with weavers, printers, embroiderers, and artists across India sustain a practice rooted in respect, continuity, and craft. In 2024, this philosophy expanded into lifestyle with India Through Craft - a curated world of artisanal décor, textiles, and objets d’art that gently blur the boundaries between fashion, craft, and home.

The Ethos

For Baidya, fashion is not seasonal - it is cultural. It lives in the rituals of everyday handmade luxury: a silk set echoing Bengal chintz, an animal-print dress rendered in crisp Kerala cotton, a handwoven tissue silk saree carrying generations of artistry.

His silhouettes champion Indian craftsmanship with a quiet simplicity - fluid, feminine, grounded in storytelling, and designed for a modern global life.

“I’m less interested in trend than in truth. True luxury is time - in how a garment is made, worn, passed down, re-worn, and ultimately remembered. It lives in the hands that craft it, and in the soul
that wears it.”

Beyond Fashion

A storyteller at heart, Pranay Baidya extends his creative voice beyond the atelier through a parallel practice as a travel and culture writer. His essays, memoirs, and photo narratives have been commissioned and published across leading platforms, written with the same sensitivity he brings to print and drape.

Whether chronicling a spice market in Sicily, a childhood memory from Benaras, or the slow rhythms of a weaver’s village in Bengal, Baidya approaches prose as he does design - seeking beauty, nuance, and soul in the everyday.
